Tafari

Photograph of Barrington Levy, Dancehall Musician, Jamaica

TAFARI was born in Kingston, Jamaica and is the son of legendary Reggae artist Big Youth. Tafari and his other siblings understood at an early age the life of an artist/musician as their father was grabbing major headlines because of his worldwide success.

Following in the footsteps of Big Youth was the norm for Tafari and his brother Eysat Buchannan as they decided to pursue a career in music. They were blessed with a God given talent to see the world and interpret it through rhyme. Braving criticisms of reggae and dancehall purists, and living up to his powerful birth name "fearless one" Tafari has branded himself as one of the few Hip-Hop Reggae artists in an industry reluctant to experiment with the genre.

Since entering the business as a teenager, Tafari has collaborated with some of Jamaica's popular Dancehall giants such as Wayne Wonder, Lady Saw, Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, Vybz Kartel and R&B singer/songwriter Jimmy Cozier. Tafari's recent collaboration with Junior Reid was on the smash hit song titled "Ain't No Stoppin" www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-X32BA6N_Y. The brand new duet with his father, Big Youth titled "Not An Easy Road" www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xk1NwQKjaGc is destined to be a Jamaican anthem.

In addition to his list of musical collaborations, Tafari has two songs featured on the soundtrack of Academy Award-nominated Director/Film Writer/Producer John Singleton's latest film, "Illegal Tender" www.illegaltendermovie.net. The songs featured are "Jamaican Thang" and "A Darker Side of Jamaica".

Tafari's stage show experience is expansive as he has toured the world with father Big Youth, appearing on gigs all across the United States, Europe and most recently Argentina, performing in front of a crowd of 20,000 at the 2007 Pepsi Fest.

Tafari is not one to wait around and has taken his career in his own hands. He has teamed with in-house producers Hit Depot to create a sound that fuses Reggae, Hip-Hop, and R&B further laying stake to his "own" sound. In addition, he has established his own independent label, Hygrade Entertainment along with partner and business manager Karamo Rowe. Together they have created a roster of talented artists and producers from various genres of music that are poised to make Hygrade Entertainment an Indie label to watch in the future.

This newfound independence has breathed new life into Tafari and his music leaving only one thing on his mind. Making history!
